I had the pleasure of visiting an exhibition of J.V. Martin’s work at Tif Sigfrids gallery in New York. The exhibition is held through July 9th at 75 E. Broadway NY, NY 10002. Gallery hours are Thursday to Saturday, 12 to 6 and by appointment. Below is the full announcement, as well as pictures from my visit. More here:

Tif Sigfrids is thrilled to announce an exhibition of works by the late Danish painter J. V. Martin at its New York gallery on 75 East Broadway. The show will open with a reception on Friday, May 20th from 4-6 PM and remain on view through July 9th. This is the gallery’s first presentation of Martin’s work and the artist’s first solo exhibition in the US.

J. V. Martin (b. 1930 d. 1993) lived and worked in the provincial town of Randers, Denmark, a four-hour train ride from Copenhagen. Despite the remoteness of his locale Martin was firmly connected to one of the most important movements in art and critical theory in postwar Europe. Martin was admitted to the Situationist International (SI) at a moment when every other artist in the group had either been pressured to resign or was soon to be excluded by decree. The Situationists had grown wary of art’s usefulness to their project of societal disruption. However, rather than abandoning art completely, they redirected their energy toward an “anti-Situationist” art that revolved around the destruction of art objects and substitution of games for conventional art media.

Martin was integral to the development of this “anti-Situationist” art. His 1963 exhibition “Destruction of the RSG-6” included white canvases on which Guy Debord had painted Situationist slogans; relief paintings by Michèle Bernstein in which the Situationist writer reimagined the history of class struggle as one of proletarian victory; a shooting range, in which the audience was encouraged to use portraits of world leaders for target practice; and Martin’s own “Thermonuclear Cartographies,” a series of large canvases in which he used hair, scrap metal, and rotting cheese to envisage the alteration of familiar topographies by nuclear war.

Most of these works were destroyed in 1965 when a bomb rumored to have been planted by the Danish secret service exploded in Martin’s apartment. Yet Martin continued his “anti-Situationist” art practice in his series of “Golden Fleet” paintings commenced in 1968 from which the current exhibition includes a rare early example. Incorporating thick layers of gold paste, plastic models of warships, and comic strips, the Golden Fleet paintings suggest a war game in which the forces of playfulness (of which Martin imagined himself the admiral) is deployed against capitalist imperialism.

At the same time, Martin continued to make paintings reminiscent of those created by the Cobra movement between 1948 and 1951. Cobra was a part of the DNA of Situationism that Debord had always sought to distance himself from. Martin’s Cobra- style paintings, of which the forthcoming exhibition includes several key examples, not only call into question the idea of an “anti-Situationist” art. They bring to the fore Situationism’s fraught relationship to the avant-garde art tradition on which it was modeled. For all but a few brief moments, J.V. Martin’s Scandinavian section of the SI was a movement of one. Nevertheless, Martin vehemently opposed Debord’s dissolution of the SI in 1972 and continued to call himself a Situationist until his death in 1993.

Works by J. V. Martin were included in the 1989 exhibition “On the Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time” touring the Musée National d’Art Moderne Centre Pompidou in Paris, Institute of Contemporary Art London, and Institute of Contemporary Art Boston. Works by Martin were also included in the 2017 exhibition “Tous contre le spectacle” at the Arsenale Institute for the Politics of Representation in Venice, Italy and in the 2018 exhibition “The Most Dangerous Game” at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. Martin’s work has been the subject of two retrospective exhibitions at Randers Kunstmuseum in 2007 and Møstings Hus in Copenhagen in 2021. In 2014 Sternberg Press published a monographic study of J. V. Martin’s life and work from 1962 to 1972 by art historian Mikkel Bolt.

The exhibition includes a section of historic documents. It is curated by Niels Henriksen, an art historian who recently defended his PhD on the art and archaeology of Asger Jorn.

MARTIN, J.V. J.V. Martin. [Randers]: Cykelbørsen Randers, 2010. n.p. [ca. 162 p.]; ill.; 21 x 30 cm.; black cover with text in white

“In 1986, J.V. Martin wrote a manuscript which was intended to be published in connection with a retrospective exhibition at the Randers Museum of Art. For various reason, it never came out. This is now being remedied” (press release, inserted loosely inside this volume — translation is ours). The facsimile version of the manuscript was published on the occasion of the exhibition “Storadmiralen går i land” (The Grand Admiral goes ashore”), held at Galleri Cykelbørsen in Randers in 2010. The original copy resides at the Randers Local Historical Archive. Excerpts had previously been published in 2007.

The mansuscript reads like a journey through Martin’s most significant artistic period, starting in the late 1950s and with a focus on the S.I. years. One reads about the Situationist International, the Little Mermaid scandal, the RSG-6 exhibition, the firebombing of Martin’s own apartment, and more.

We locate 2 copies on OCLC, both in Demark.

Konstrevy 5-6 [1963] – Rare article by J.V. Martin about the RSG-6 exhibit

Martin, J.V. [Else Steen Hansen]. Homo Ludens. In Konstrevy 5-6 (pp. 200-203). Stockholm: Ahlen & Akerlunds Forlags, 1963. ca. 64 p. [numbered 162-224]; ill.; 21 x 30 cm.; ill. Black and red wrappers with text in white.

Rare contemporary account of the RSG-6 exhibit (“Homo Ludens” by Else Steen Hansen (pp. 200-203) published in a Swedish avant-garde art magazine. Even more uncommon is the fact that this profusely illustrated review received the closest thing to praise from the members of the Internationale Situationniste. In “les mois les plus longs” (Internationale Situationniste 9, August 1964), those who professed their contempt for all art critics describe Hansen’s review as “un compte rendu intelligent” (see http://mai68.org/textes/IS/i-situationniste.blogspot.com/2007/04/les-mois-les-plus-longs.html)

So how is this possible? Well, the only review the Situationists would endorse is one written by their own. Indeed, Else Steen Hansen is a pseudonym for J.V. Martin, who authored this (understandably positive) review. The full text (along with the illustrations) can be found at http://www.copenhagenfreeuniversity.dk/homolude.html

The Antinational Situationist No. 1 / Den Antinationale Situationist No.1 [1974]

[Bauhaus Situationiste] KROJER, Tom; THORSEN, Jens Jorgen (Eds.). The Antinational Situationist No. 1 / Den Antinationale Situationist No.1. Våxtorp, Sweden / Copenhagen, Denmark: Bauhaus Situationiste, n.d. [1974]. n.p. [30 p.]; ill.; 21 x 29.5 cm.; yellow screen-printed wrappers with text in black

The Antinational Situationist – sub-titled “Tidsskrift for almen kreativitet mode stater, uniformer, autoriteter og generaler” (“periodical for common creativity against states, uniforms, authorities, popes and generals”) – was a bilingual (English/Danish) periodical published by the Bauhaus Situationiste. Its editors, Tom Krojer and Jens Jorgen Thersen, had big ambitions: “We are happy to present you the first issue of our periodical for common creativity, ‘The Antinational Situationist’. As you will see, this first issue is concentrated on the collective creativity, which according to our opinion is the threshold of a completely new phase in culture. The First Situationist International, based in Paris, is completely dead now….Therefore the Antinational Situationist movement is founded, and this is marked by bringing the outlines for the manifesto of the founding of this movement. In Issue 2 of this periodical we hope to be able to publish the signed and ratified manifesto.” (p.1). However, only a single issue of this beautiful screen-printed magazine would ever be released.

This inaugural issue includes a wide range of contributions (all in English and Danish)
(1) “Beyond The Crisis Of Abstraction And The Abstract Break With That Crisis: The SI”, by former American SI member Jon Horelick. The article offers a harsh critique of Debord and Sanguinetti’s La véritable scission dans l’Internationale.
(2) “Is this Metaville? A project for creative play” by Jens Jorgen Thorsen, in collaboration with Susanne Ussing and Carsten Hoff. The article brings backs and builds on the notions of architecture and play, as expressed in the writings and Constant and the early SI.
(3) “The Antinational of the Fourth World: Divided we Stand” by Jens Jorgen Thorsen. This is the draft Manifesto of Antinational Situationist, which is co-signed by Jorgen Nash, J.V. Martin, Patrick O’Brien (i.e., Asger Jorn), Tom Krojen, Ambrosius Fjord (Jorn’s horse), Andres King, Yoshio Nakajima, Liza Menue, Heimad Prem, Mette Aarre, Heinz Freitag, Liz Zwick, Novi Maruni, and Helmut Strum.
(4) “My pocket history of collective painting” by Jens Jorgen Thorsen. This discusses the art of collective painting including Cobra’s practices
(5) “Collective painting statement” by Tom Krojer and J.J. Thorsen.
(6) “All culture is collective” by J.V. Martin, an apology of collective creation and criticism of individual art (“DOWN WITH ART WHICH IS SELF-CONTENTED AND EGOCENTRIC, WHICH CONTEMPLATES ITS OWN NAVEL!”)
Finally, the last two pages list publications by the Bauhaus Situationiste and its members

Texts (2), (3) and (6) are reproduced in Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen & Jakob Jakobsen’s Cosmonauts of the Future: Texts from the Situationist Movement in Scandinavia and Elsewhere (Copenhagen: Nebula and Brooklyn: Autonomedia, 2015.

We locate a single copy of this rare publication on OCLC (Princeton).

Rare second poster by the Scandinavian section of the Situationist International, which denounces the Danish Ministry of Culture’s commercialist policies. Includes an excerpt from Debord’s “Thèses sur la révolution culturelle. “The Situationist International’s investigation of the KP scandal in Aarhus is complete. The Young Artist Association and its ally, the new state-endorsed K.P. in Aarhus, are exposed for their commercially-inspired coup attempt. A coup attempt that is as dangerous as the state’s attempt to gain control of the last sector of society — the art sector… Put state control and commercialism back where they belong: in the dustbins of cultural History!” (translation is mine). Signed by P. Laugesen, H.H. Merved, and J.V. Martin for the Scandinavian section. Mailing addresses for the German and French sections are also provided.
